Meet the Team – Social Media Manager, Tumi Rakuba

About me

I am a journalist by profession but I haven’t practiced journalism in 3 years, while being a journalist I was introduced to social media management, which is the field I currently work in. I can honestly say that I don’t regret my decision to move away from traditional media to social media, I absolutely love the work that I do and the knowledge I get from it.

What do you do?

I am a Social Media Manager. I work on all social media platforms; creating social media content for clients, writing blogs when necessary, scheduling content on various social media platforms and communicating with the different communities on their platforms. There’s a lot of creativity and digital marketing that goes into social media management, especially when you’re working with client campaigns. I’ve been fortunate to have worked on some amazing campaigns in the past which have strengthened my skills.

What did you study?

I studied Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University, then went on to do my honours in Media Studies at the Sol Plaatje Institute for Media Leadership.

What was your first job?

A news reader for our campus radio station – Rhodes Music Radio.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

A journalist or psychologist. I actually did both in university but journalists was always my major.

What has been your career highlight?

Working as a Social Media Manager is a lot of fun but it also comes with a lot of dedication, more especially when you’re working on campaigns. I’d say the highlight of my career has been being part of many successful campaigns. The one client campaign that comes to mind is when I was still working in radio; we had a food drive for the needy. We had to choose families who were in need and provide food parcels for them (seems like an easy thing to do) but it actually is a lot work and strategic planning. One thing I took away from that campaign was that a little matters to those in need, and because I was part of something that meant so much to someone it become my highlight.

Where is home?

I live in Johannesburg, born and raised. However, home for me is Rustenburg-Tlokweng.

How do you spend your weekends?

I am sure there’s a word for this. I am what you call a homebody who also loves the outdoors. So on some weekends I enjoy staying at home watching series or reading. Then other times I enjoy going out with friends eating at restaurants, concerts/festivals and picnics.

What’s your favourite movie?

Pretty Woman.

If you could eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Pasta, all kinds- everyday, all day!

Which destination is on your bucket list to visit?

New York, Spain, Nigeria.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Massages/foot rubs.

What piece of advice can you give aspiring Social Media Managers?

Start! You won’t know how greater successful you’ll be at something if you don’t start. It’s also okay to not have everything else figured out, mistakes are supposed to happen, it’s how you learn. Sounds like a cliche or something form those self help books but I 100% believe it.

What is the best part of your job?

Honestly, being part of the different communities. Talking to people and guiding people to what they’re looking for (in terms of client related content or products) can be exhausting but learning and gaining knowing from them for free is rewarding. I am constantly learning something (a lot of the times without me asking).
